Faq shampoo for dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis.
What is the best anti-dandruff shampoo
There are a lot of anti-dandruff shampoos on the market and how do you choose. Which is the best.?
The answer is: it depends. Yes, a bit bland, but I will explain
What is the cause of your dandruff, you also have itching?
Itching and dandruff can in fact have several causes. And so, there are also various methods of treatment / shampoos with different active ingredients
1.a. All the anti dandruff shampoos same. No!:
Active ingredients that are in different products and what they do.
Zinc pyrithione: Fungicide, can reduce scaling, can relieve inflammation.
Tar: slows proliferation of skin cells. Skin cells quickly multiply so that you end up getting chips. Effective as 0,5% tar.
Salicylic acid: can be anti-inflammatory and anti-septic. Effective from 1% to 1.5% and more. Can cause irritation to sensitive skin. It is not recommended more than 0.5% to reduce irritation.
Selenium sulfide: Fungicide, effective at 1%
Sulfur: Mild antifungal and antiseptic, anti-inflammatory properties. Effective at 2%
Ketoconazole: Antifungal activity. Effective at 1% (2% more effective.)
Tea tree oil: Anti-fungal, anti-septic when the concentration is sufficient.
Rosemary oil, thyme oil, cedar oil: Anti-fungal, anti-septic, can promote healing.
Hydrocortisone: Inflammation is a critical part of the itchy flaky scalp-hydrocortisone reduces inflammation and relieves itching. Effective at 1%.
This is only available on prescription (at least it is here), as hydrocortisone can have side effects.
Piroctone olamine: Fungicide, effective at 1%
Will the RI dandruff shampoo work for me?
When the cause of dandruff and itching is serborrea then the answer is probably yes. Also, if you are like me, and have had no success with head & shoulders, Resdan, Elvive or Andrelon. (The lack of an effective shampoo was the reason for me to develop the RI dandruff shampoo.)
I’ve already had a lot of comments, both on the site and via email that range from delicious stuff until finally I found it after 30 brands. The shampoo contains Piroctone olamine, rosemary and polyquaternium
Is the cause of dandruff / itching etc another, for example, psoriasis, then you better use a shampoo containing tar or salicylic acid. Or ask something on prescription from your GP. I see no reason to believe that the shampoo would work for psoriasis, because it is not caused by the fungus that our shampoo fights
Will my hair get dry /frizzy?
Basically not. The shampoo is very mild. However, there is a matching conditioner!
Is the anti-dandruff shampoo bad (for hair)
RI dandruff shampoo is not bad for your hair.
Piroctone olamine is safe and effective compared with zinc pyrithione.
The shampoo contains no parabens
The shampoo contains no sulfates
